温泉 English page

Japanese hot springs, or onsen, are a deeply relaxing and culturally rich experience. However, they come with specific customs and etiquette that first-timers should know to enjoy them respectfully and comfortably. Here’s a beginner-friendly guide:

🌋 1. Understand What an Onsen;温泉 Is?

・An onsen is a bath filled with naturally heated geothermal spring water.

・The water often contains minerals believed to have health benefits.

・Onsen can be indoors or outdoors (rotenburo), and found in resorts, hotels (ryokan), or public bathhouses.

🧴 2. Bring or Check for Essentials

・Most onsen provide small towels , shampoo , soap , and hairdryers.

・Bring your own face towel and large towel if not provided.

・Swimsuits are not allowed—bathing is done naked (gender-separated baths).

🚿 3. Clean Yourself Thoroughly First

Before entering the onsen:

・Head to the washing area and sit on a stool.

・Use the provided soap and shampoo to wash and rinse your body thoroughly.

・Cleanliness is mandatory — you must be completely clean before soaking.

♨️ 4. Onsen Etiquette to Remember

・No soap, shampoo, or towels in the water. Rinse off all soap before entering.

・Use your small towel to modestly cover yourself when walking but do not dip it in the bath.

・No splashing, swimming, or loud conversation. Keep a calm atmosphere.

・Hair should be tied up—don’t let it touch the water.

💉 5. Tattoos? Check the Policy

・Some onsen prohibit tattoos due to their association with the yakuza (organized crime).

・Increasingly, places are more accepting or offer private baths or tattoo cover stickers.

・Always check the onsen’s tattoo policy in advance.

🌄 6. Take Your Time & Hydrate

・Start with shorter soaks (5–10 minutes) and gradually increase.

・Enjoy the view, especially in outdoor baths.

・After bathing, re-hydrate , and avoid alcohol immediately afterward.

🛏️ 7. Try Staying at a Ryokan;旅館

・For the full experience, stay at a traditional inn (ryokan) with an onsen.

・Includes meals, yukata robes, and a more immersive atmosphere.

Let’s try & enjoy the Onsen!

See you next time!
